Sights of Trogir

All the main attractions of Trogir in Croatia are concentrated in the old part of the city, it is here that travelers from all over the world come.

St. Lawrence Cathedral

The temple is located on John Paul II Square and, as if, dominates the city. Earlier on the site of the cathedral was a church, destroyed in the 12th century. Later, in 1193, the construction of a new temple began, which was completed several decades later.

The modern version of the temple is a building with three naves in the Romanesque style, the architectural ensemble complements the bell tower in the Gothic style.

It is important! A distinctive feature of the cathedral is the Romanesque portal, built in the middle of the 13th century. This is the most valuable piece of art by local artists.

The portal is decorated with scenes on biblical themes, there is an image of plants and animals. Artists also came up with symbolic images for each month of the year, for example, December is a hunter who fights with a wild boar, and February is a girl with fish. On both sides of the portal are sculptures of Adam and Eve, they were depicted on the backs of predators - a lion and a lioness.

The chapel also deserves close attention, it was built in the period from 1468 to 1472. Inside there are 12 sculptures of the apostles and a sarcophagus with the remains of the first bishop of Trogir in Croatia - St. John.

The interior design of the temple is quite simple - the department, built in the 13th century, is made of stone and covered with statues. The seats are wooden and the altar is decorated with paintings.

Undoubtedly, the main decoration of the temple is a bell tower 47 meters high, it was rebuilt twice - in the 15th and 16th centuries. Window openings decorated with carvings. Climbing the bell tower, tourists find themselves on the observation deck, which offers an amazing view of the whole of Trogir.

There is a bell tower opposite the church of St. Lawrence. Outside, the attraction looks very picturesque, tourists are attracted by Italian architecture, which dominates this part of Croatia. The blue dial on the white walls is a symbol of Trogir. The tower dominates the city in Croatia, therefore it is here that one of the best observation platforms was built, from where you can see not only the resort, but also the sea, green hills, mountains in the distance.

Good to know! The staircase that leads to the observation deck is very steep, it’s quite difficult to climb. In addition, the steps are narrow, in some places it is difficult for two people to miss each other, but the view from above is worth the effort.

Camerlengo Fortress

Several defensive structures were built in the city, each one is a real open-air museum, but the Camerlengo building is considered the main attraction of Trogir. The enemy troops from Venice repeatedly tried to capture the city, when they succeeded, they built a fortress here, which became the greatest defensive structure in Europe. The fortress was able to withstand the longest siege, thanks to this the Italians were able to stay in Trogir for a long time.

Interesting fact! You can enter the fortress territory only on the bridge thrown across the moat.

The attraction has a completely unique atmosphere, which can be felt while walking around the courtyard, and looking at the ancient coats of arms of the Venetian noble families. Scenes of historical films are often shot on the territory of the fortress, and in the warm season, festivals and various cultural events are held here.
