Dates of sowing radish: when to plant in different regions, at home and in open ground?

Radish is a wonderful vegetable in the Cabbage family, which has many useful properties. Many gardeners grow it on the site, but it is necessary to take into account the time of planting, otherwise the plant may not have time to go into the fruiting stage, or even die.

This article will discuss the rules of the time period in which it is most profitable to plant a radish at home, in a greenhouse or open ground, and also find out what are the consequences of untimely sowing of seeds.

The consequences of untimely planting seeds

The studied plant requires a short daylight hours, the radish has a specific property - flowering - if the seeds of a vegetable are sown too early (the optimal sowing period for early ripe varieties is March, it is not recommended to plant), flowering will occur in mid-summer, which will cause nutrients to be removed from the root to the flowers , the consequence of this may be loss of crop. And with the early planting of winter varieties, cracks appear on root crops.

With a long daylight, the radish gives arrows, the root crop becomes too hard and unsuitable for consumption, and the flowers will take away all the nutrients from the edible part.

What determines the time period for sowing culture?

Planting time is mainly determined by the plant variety:

  • there are early small-fruited ones, they ripen in 40-50 days;
  • early (summer), the period of their maturation is 50-65 days;
  • late (autumn or winter), they will ripen in 90-110 days.

The climate also affects the landing period:

  • In the temperate and southerly, the appropriate time will be mid-July, in which case the root crop will be able to shoot arrows.
  • Owners of garden plots in regions with hot summers are advised to plant a radish in the second half of June.

It is advisable that the day of planting be calm and cloudy, as the radish is a cold-resistant plant that prefers moist soil.

When to plant a root crop?

At different times of the year

According to the lunar calendar, favorable days for planting a radish are:

  • March 1, 5, 23-25, 28, 29;
  • April 2, 20, 23, 25, 26, 29;
  • May 4, 21, 23, 26, 28;
  • 1.19, 24, 29 June;
  • July 20, 25, 30.
For spring harvest, crops are sown between December and February, obviously under warmed conditions.

In different places: at home, in a greenhouse, in open ground

  1. Growing vegetables in a greenhouse will allow to achieve a good harvest in autumn and winter, it is advisable to warm the soil to 15 degrees, also greenhouses should be aired, the result will be an abundant radish crop. The dates of planting the plant in the greenhouse are not so important, the main thing is careful care, it will be advisable to plant seeds in the greenhouse in September-December.
  2. Home way also suitable for those who want to grow radish all year round, the optimum temperature is 15-22 degrees. In winter, the plant can be transferred to the room, in the warm season - put in the open air. To grow a radish at home is realistic, but not economically feasible: the necessary costs will arise for the implementation of conditions similar to open ground.

Growing radishes in seedlings and seedlings:

  • When growing radish seedlings should begin to sow in the second half of March. Transplanting seedlings into beds is carried out a month later, when 2 pairs of leaves are formed on the seedlings.
  • For such an unpretentious plant like radish, a non-seedling method of cultivation is sometimes used: the soil after snow melt and a temperature of 3-5 degrees are suitable for planting seeds in open ground, usually this is April. Growing will proceed quietly at a temperature of 18-20 degrees and without sharp thermal jumps.

    Radish is characterized by large seeds, the plant grows quickly enough, besides it is cold-resistant, therefore it is sown in the ground without seedlings. It is advisable to plant the plant either in early spring or in August.

Depending on the type of vegetable

It is important to know when, in what month of spring or summer, you can plant a vegetable in open ground or on seedlings, depending on the type and variety: Daikon, May, black and other.
  • Black radish most often late or mid-ripening, therefore, its seeds are planted from late May to early August; for winter storage, the interval from July to August is preferred.
  • White radish (including daikon) is mid-season, and sowing is done in spring. Daikon is suitable for year-round cultivation in a greenhouse, and it should be planted in open ground at the end of May.
  • Varieties of green radish “Green Goddess” and “Margelan” are early ripe, and “Yuzhanka” is late ripe. In late April - early May, early ripening varieties are sown: Maiskaya, Ladushka, Sultan - for consumption in the summer. The best time for planting a late radish intended for long-term storage is the period from the second half of June to July, such as Lekar, Chernavka, Negro, Winter Round Black.

In various regions: in Siberia, Moscow region, in the Urals

Below is a discussion of when to plant culture in Siberia, the Urals, and the Moscow Region.

  • In Siberia, early radish is sown on beds no later than mid-May, such a crop can be harvested in late July - August. It is customary to plant winter radish in Siberia in the second half of June; root crops for storage in winter have time to ripen before the onset of autumn frosts, even in cold areas.
  • April - early May - the ideal time for planting the studied plant in the suburbs. In this region, you can plant a radish in the winter, of course, late varieties.
  • The climatic conditions of the Urals are not much different from the Siberian, so the rules for planting radishes are almost identical, but experts recommend planting the plant in open ground in early May, and winter varieties in July.

So, detailed information on the radish planting dates has been obtained, the main thing is not to mix the varieties and not expose the vegetable to too long daylight hours. You should pay attention to the dates on the lunar calendar of the corresponding year and do not miss the spring planting, otherwise you can be left without beautiful root crops.
