Beds in a modern interior - lots of inspiring ideas

In any bedroom, the bed is not only the main piece of furniture, but also the focal point of space. It is around the bed that the whole concept of the design of a room for sleeping and relaxing is being built. To a large extent, the interior of the room depends on how the bed will look, and on how it performs its functionality, our well-being, sleep quality, and therefore our state of health, directly depend. A healthy, sound sleep will help to ensure a stop in the bedroom - a calm neutral palette, pleasant textiles, comfortable and high-quality furniture. This publication will be devoted to the acquisition of a central element of bedroom furniture.

Given that we spend a third of our lives in a dream, it is necessary to seriously approach the choice of the main subject to ensure a sound and deep sleep. You can save on other pieces of furniture, decor and even decoration, but for a good rest you need a good bed. Let's talk in more detail about what are the criteria for choosing a berth.

Bed Design - Features of Choice

Bed frame

In simple terms, the design of the bed consists of a frame and a base on which the mattress is installed. Conventionally, all existing frameworks can be divided into two types:

  1. The frame consists of two supporting backs and two drawers (panels)
  2. As part of the frame, four drawers and hinged backs can be distinguished. There can be two or only one of these backs (headboard)

If the bed is designed according to the second type of frame, then, as a rule, it is located on four legs (sometimes the wheels, side walls, additional constructions such as a podium or platform can act in their quality).

Which option to choose is up to you. In fact, the design features of the bed are not so important, how important is the manufacturer, the material and the integrity of the manufacture. If we talk about statistics, then the legs at the beds break more often than the backs, but this is not an absolute.

In addition to the design, the material from which the bed frame is made is of great importance. Berths made of metal and solid wood are the most reliable and durable option.

Beds made of MDF and fiberboard are less reliable. The most common problems with such structures are cracks in the fasteners, due to which the furniture becomes loose and begins to creak. If the bed frame is made of chipboard, then such troubles during operation will arise even earlier. Chipboard beds are the cheapest, but such furniture items will not last long.

Bed base

The bed frame is responsible for the solidity of the supporting structure, but the quality of your sleep will directly depend on the choice of base and mattress. The basis can be called a frame or lattice, which is attached to the bed frame and is a support for the mattress (the choice of which is a question for a separate publication). The frame of the bed can be made of metal, wood or chipboard. Slats are installed on the frame (sometimes called lats), which are made of wood or plastic - these structural elements must be bent. There should be as many lamels as possible; the bed service life directly depends on their number. The distance between the lamellas should not exceed the width of the strips themselves. For a double bed, the number of slats equal to 30 is considered normal (but better - more), for a single bed for sleeping - respectively, half as much.

Among the design features of the beds, the existence of models with a lifting base (gas-lift mechanism) should also be noted. Rising smoothly, the base provides access to the roomy storage system created by the bed frame. In a large drawer you can store seasonal blankets or extra bedding sets. But such mechanisms have drawbacks - the bed base in this case is not ventilated, which means that the lower part of the mattress is also deprived of air.

Similar ventilation problems arise with beds with drawers located at the bottom of the bed. Choosing beds with hoists or drawers makes sense only if there is a real lack of storage space. Otherwise, it is better to abandon additional storage systems in favor of a much longer service life of your mattress.

Headboards

Beds without a headboard are rarely found in modern interiors, because without this important attribute of a place to sleep is quite uncomfortable. An exception is when the bed is set against a wall that is decorated with soft textile panels.

The back-headboard serves not only as support for the resting person on the bed, but also serves as a relaxation. This element of the bed is necessary for those who like reading before bedtime or watching TV. From the point of view of Feng Shui, the back-head is necessary for a sense of security in those who are lying in bed or reclining reading a book. This attribute of the central piece of furniture in any bedroom gives a feeling of calm and reliability.

Shod and rack headboards are not convenient enough for those who like to read before going to bed, but an additional set of flat pillows will help solve this problem.

Choose a bed to your liking and to the interior of the room

Upholstered beds

The current trend in the design of beds suggests that this is not just a piece of furniture for sleeping and relaxing, but also a beautiful, practical and at the same time safe object of your furniture. Upholstered beds became popular precisely due to the presence of all the above qualities.

Not only families with small children who resort to the parent's bedroom, knocking down all corners, fell in love with such pieces of furniture. A bed with upholstery around the entire perimeter looks presentable, as if inviting the owner to plunge into the soft arms of sleep and rest.

For children's bedrooms and rooms for teenagers, soft beds can become not only a safe piece of furniture, but also a decoration of the interior, bright upholstery of the bed can become an accent in the design, highlighting this already important element of furniture to the forefront.

As a rule, PPU filler is hidden under the upholstery of the beds - it is harmless and hypoallergenic. The lush upholstery of the double bed gives not only the piece of furniture a more luxurious look, but also transforms the entire design of the bedroom, making it more impressive, respectable.

Wrought iron beds in a modern interior

It is now difficult to say exactly when exactly the first forged products appeared. Despite the abundance of materials for the manufacture of furniture, metal beds are popular to this day. Having come a long way in dozens of centuries, forging has become a multifaceted and skillful way to produce not only a strong and durable piece of furniture, but also a real decoration of a modern interior.

Even such solid and impressive pieces of furniture as double beds can look airy, weightless, thanks to the skillful execution of forged parts. The variety of possibilities of such craft as forging allows you to find a suitable bed model for various interior styles - from classic to modern styling.

The rural interior, or country style, successfully transfers the integration of forged furniture. A bed made of metal painted white will harmoniously look both in the Provence style and in the room decorated in the style of shabby chic.

Classic solid wood bed is always in trend

No matter how much time passes, no matter what new materials appear for the manufacture of furniture, an array of wood will remain popular, in demand and one of the most reliable materials. A bed made of solid wood is itself a decoration of the room, and if the surroundings are appropriate for it, then the bedroom becomes a cult place in the house.

It is difficult to imagine a classic interior without a massive bed made of wood, with carved legs and a headboard decorated with carvings. The central piece of bedroom furniture, made of solid wood, will not only be a harmonious and environmentally friendly decoration for your interior, but will also be an excellent investment for many years.

A natural wood bed can become the focal point of not only a classic bedroom. In a modern interior, wooden products without excessive decor integrate very successfully.

Typically, a wooden bed is not painted, but coated with protective varnishes to demonstrate the natural shade of the material. But there are also models of beds made of wood and painted in bright colors. Such colorful coloring of a berth allows him to become the focal center of the bedroom, to capture the full attention of anyone entering the room.

Four-poster bed - forgotten traditions in a modern interior

In ancient times, the canopy was invented as a means of preserving heat - it was made of dense fabric and in most cases had a thick lining. The canopy was mounted on four rails, which could be wooden or metal. Nowadays, the canopy has a more decorative role, made of thin, airy fabrics, usually tulle textiles.

According to the configuration of the bed with the possibility of using a canopy, there are rails that are attached to the bed frame and the whole design of the bed located on the platform or base, to which the canopy supporting rails are mounted.

In the modern bedroom interior, a bed model with slats can be harmoniously applied to install a canopy in the absence of the latter. Tall posts designed to support textiles can just be part of the bed decor, design features.

Hanging beds - a new word in bedroom design

Fashion for hanging beds came to us from Asian island countries, where such pieces of furniture are the usual surroundings of bungalows and villas on the ocean, designed for relaxation. In warmer countries, hanging beds can be installed on the outdoor terrace or under a canopy for a relaxing outdoor break. In fact, even the slightest movement of the bed leads to a measured gentle sway, which can lull even people with insomnia.

Hanging beds can be either double or single, rectangular and round, with or without sides. Most often there are massive rectangular bases with a fairly high mattress laid on it. The bed base is fastened with four chains or thick jute ropes to the ceiling (using anchor brackets). The bed is installed, or rather suspended in the center of the room or closer to one of the walls, but not close (you must leave a margin in the distance to the walls and other furniture for swinging).

Some interiors use a simulated hanging bed. The product actually stands on legs that are hidden in the depths and therefore it seems that the bed is hanging. Some models are attached to the wall on one side, and the other end is suspended from the ceiling. The installation of any model of a hanging bed (except for imitation) needs serious calculations - not every ceiling is capable of supporting the weight of the bed together with people lying on it or one person.

Beds with a ledge at the base

Such models are very convenient in terms of proper operation of the berth. Sitting on a solid ledge of the base of your bed, you protect the mattress from constant local loads (which inevitably arise when landing on the mattress) and extend its service life. Given that often orthopedic mattresses are more expensive than the bed itself, this aspect may be a key point when choosing a bed model.

Some original ways to decorate the head of the bed

Even if your bed is the simplest model, you can focus on the central and most important piece of furniture in the room for sleeping and relaxing with the help of a creative approach to the design of the head. For example, with the help of textiles, you can make many design options for the head of the bed - from the soft wall to the fabric labyrinths that were used to decorate the window openings.

A bedroom in a country style or ethno-style will be decorated with a headboard made of almost untreated wood. Chipped planks or logs with wormholes will add brutality to the room, even some primitive rusticity.

The painted wooden headboard, as if aged, is also able to bring to the bedroom interior not only an element of surprise, but also make it more unique, personalized.

Colorful panels or colorful artwork can not only draw attention to the area of the bed, but also diversify the color palette of the bedroom.

Tree branches, trunks, bark and much more are used by modern designers to realize their thoughts and fantasies in the field of decorating beds. You do not have to doubt the originality of not only your bed, but of the entire interior, acquiring a designer model of a berth, decorated with a special, individual style.

In fact, for the decor of the space at the head of the bed you can also use very practical decorative elements - open shelves, small shelves and niches for storage, lighting and wall lamps to use not only as part of the lighting system, but decor items or even art objects.

And finally, a few practical tips for choosing a bed in accordance with its size:

  • if you get a bed in the finished bedroom interior, then accurately measure the area of space that is allocated for it;
  • if it is indicated on the package or price tag of the bed that the size is “standard” - check the parameters with the consultant;
  • it is better to verify the dimensions of the product on your own, often in the price lists only the dimensions of the bed, and not the bed itself;
  • choose the largest size that your bedroom can accommodate (standard sizes of beds in double beds - 160, 180 and 200 cm);
  • When considering options for the size of the beds, do not forget about the length - the size that is 15 cm higher than the height of the person who will sleep on the bed is considered ideal and sufficient;
  • the height of the bed above the floor is also very important, ideally if the bed mattress reaches the knee of a person standing nearby (the latest fashion trends in the bed area tend to be low models, but they are not suitable for older people - the older the person, the higher should be his sleeping a place).
