How to remove paint from the walls

In fact, removing old paint from the walls is a very time-consuming process. The speed of your work depends on the type of paint, room and surface. For example, the paint applied to concrete is the hardest to remove. And how many ways, methods and other rituals exist on this subject. Let’s see which ones are really effective and which are not.

We will understand in detail how to remove paint from the walls.

It turns out that there are so many very different and original ways of removing paint from a wall or ceiling:

  1. burning out;
  2. solvent;
  3. a mixture of lime, chalk and soda ash;
  4. a grinder with a wide circle or a punch with a special nozzle;
  5. chisel or trowel;
  6. or even an ax! Can you imagine It turns out the paint can be removed with an ax! But first things first.

But with all the wide variety, not all methods are effective. For example, burning paint from a wall is a troublesome process. Firstly, we need a special tool (building hair dryer, gas lamp, etc.), and secondly, the products of the combustion of paint are quite toxic and harmful to health. And what can I say, if the burning occurs in a small room with poor ventilation. And to be honest, the result is not always happy, because because of the high heat resistance, not all paint can be burned out.

Remove paint with solvent. This method is suitable for almost any type of paint. Of the minuses, one can single out cash costs (although small, but still). Consider the process in more detail.

To begin with, we decide that it is not recommended to clean old paint, because it contains asbestos (minerals from the class of silicates, very harmful to health). If necessary, you should adhere to some rules: work in overalls, and it is better to cover the floor in advance.

  1. Removing textured or conventional emulsion paint starts from the top of the wall. We take a brush, dip in a solvent and apply with an even thick layer on a painted surface, while it is better to rub the solvent in several approaches. Then you need to wait from 3 to 6 hours (depending on the paint layer).
  2. The paint softened, what's next? We take a scraper and from the bottom of the wall we begin to scrape off the same paint. All residues on the wall must also be removed. To do this, we need a stiff brush. With forward movements, the old material perfectly slazes. After you need to wash the wall, and several times. For starters, it is better to wash with warm water with a solution of soda ash or detergent, and then just with water. That's all the secrets of removing paint from the wall with a solvent.

The most extraordinary way is an ax with warm water (in practice, a very long process). Best suited for plastered walls or ceilings. Consider the process in more detail.

  1. We take a small ax (of course, any will fit, but small is most convenient) and make notches. We “tap” on the surface with shock movements and the smaller the gap between the notches, the better.
  2. Next, we take a spray (or some rag) and apply warm water to the surface. After 4-5 minutes, the plaster absorbs water and softens. Then, with an ax (necessarily sharp), the paint is removed at a slight angle by translational movements. Simply put, you need to comb it. Recall that the ax must be really sharp, otherwise the effect will be a little worse.

As for the grinder, the process can be described as follows - well, just a lot of dust. In practice, it turned out that literally a few centimeters of grinding on the surface can dust the room more than the tractor at the construction site (of course, we exaggerated a bit). And not everyone has the tool at hand.

The conclusion is this: the method is quite effective, but very dusty. If the work does not take place in the house, but on the street and the surface is quite large, then the grinder will probably be the most productive method.

Stripping with a mixture of lime, chalk and soda ash will work if the paint doesn’t sit well. Such a solution is rather weak, but it can easily remove the "young" paint. The removal process is the same as with the solvent (described above).

A putty knife with a chisel are suitable if the paint peels off and falls off almost by itself. Otherwise, you simply lose time and energy. The process is quite simple: by translating along the surface we peel off the old material.

Output. With all the variety of methods, the most effective ones are a puncher and a grinder. Which one is best for you - choose yourself based on the situation. Now you know how to remove paint from walls and ceilings.
